This was a fun day that deserves a trip report that I don’t have the time to write at the moment. I finished editing the photos a couple weeks ago, but haven’t had the time to organize my thoughts on this trip; I’m in the midst of a cross-country move, so my free time is very limited. I’m spending that free time hanging out with friends and family or hiking.
I’m hoping that I’ll come back and some point and add some details, but for now, here are some photos and some memorable parts of the hike:
- The view from Register Ridge is one of my favorites in SoCal, especially when everything is covered with snow.
- The trip was a good reminder that winter hiking and snowshoeing should be thought of in terms of hours on the trail or elevation gain, not mileage.
- Having lived in Southern California all of their lives, Mirian and Danny have very little exposure to snow and cold weather.
- It was the first time that Mirian had ever been in snow, except for the time she went snowboarding.
- It was the first time that Danny and Mirian had ever really hiked in snow and was their first snowshoeing experience. They were both amazed at how much tougher it was than just hiking.
- This hike convinced me I need to spend more time on cardio during the week. My training has really dropped off since our C2C hike in October.

- During strenuous hiking, the upper limit for this hoody is about 35 degrees for me.

- In terms of feel and comfort, they are very similar to the heavyweight Thorlo socks I used for years, but with the added bonus of merino wool’s properties.
- Wore them for 2 days around the house and running errands before the hike. No stink or crust; no hotspots or blisters on my hike.

- My 2nd hike with these boots; I like them. My feet were warm and comfortable.
- Hoka One One Tor Summit Mid WP Hiking Boot – Men’s
- Someone visiting from NH needed to boots for this hike, who just happened to wear the same size boot as me. I let him use the boots; no blisters or hotspots.
